南大与英大学合设研究院
研发新光子学技术

随着光纤网络普及化,本地光纤市场发展迅速,对这类技术的要求也越来越高。南洋理工大学与英国南安普顿大学(University of Southampton)联合成立光子学研究院,合作研发新的光子学技术,以期生产价格更低廉、效能更高的光纤和光学产品。

研究院也计划在5年内培训120名研究生,深入研究超强激光、超材料(metamaterials)等光子学课题。

设在南大工程系大楼旁的光子学研究院(Photonics Institute)获得总值1亿元的研究资金,这笔资金来自多家私人企业和政府机构,如新科研、经济发展局、国家研究基金和教育部。

研究院旗下有5间研究中心:光纤科技中心、创新光子学科技中心、LUMINOUS! 半导体灯光与荧光屏卓越研究中心、光学与激光工程中心,以及OPTIMUS!光子学卓越研究中心。

其中最新成立的光纤科技中心,与光子学研究院一同在昨天正式启用。

5间研究中心的科学家和职员共120名。中心设有先进光学仪器和研究设施,包括一台高3层楼的光纤生产机,能制作硅纤维(silica fibre)和玻璃纤维(glass fibre)。

A total of $15 million in research grants has been awarded to scientists from the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and the National University of Singapore (NUS) to develop new clean energy sources and small-scale power grids.

The funding comes under the fourth grant call last year of the Energy Innovation Research Programme (EIRP), a $140 million Government initiative aimed at promoting research and development in the energy sector.

One of the grant recipients, Professor Chan Siew Hwa from NTU's Energy Research Institute (Eri@n), will be developing a way for low-temperature fuel cells to generate electricity from hydrogen contaminated with chlorine. It would use hydrogen produced as a by-product during chlorine production, 10 to 15 per cent of which is normally released into the atmosphere and wasted.

Another grant recipient, Associate Professor Sanjib Kumar Panda from NUS' Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, will be developing a hybrid diesel-solar power generating system that can provide electricity to remote parts of Southeast Asia.

全球百大EMBA课程 南大国大名列前10

英国《金融时报》全球100大高级工商管理硕士课程(EMBA)排名出炉,南洋理工大学南洋商学院今年第2次参加评选就成功挤入10大,从去年的第13位跃升到第8位。新加坡国立大学商学院的两项课程则分别排名第4和第18位。

高级工商管理硕士课程(EMBA)是面向在职企业高级管理者的学位课程。

《金融时报》自2001年起为全球100所提供这类课程的商学院进行排名,评选指标包括:商学院的管理学思想创新和项目国际化程度,以及学员毕业后的平均年薪、工作经验和目标实现等。

南洋商学院独立开办的南洋EMBA课程今年排名全球第8位,较去年跃升5个位置。以独立开办的EMBA课程判断,南洋EMBA课程排名新加坡之首、全球则名列第2,仅次于美国宾夕法尼亚大学著名的沃顿商学院(Wharton School)。

新加坡国立大学商学院开办的两项课程,今年则分别排名第4和第18位。

国大商学院与美国洛杉矶加州大学安德森(Anderson)商学院联办的EMBA课程今年微升一个位置,排名第4;国大独立开办的亚太高层企业主管硕士课程则排名第18位,较去年下滑了一个位置。

南大发文告说,南洋商学院学生来自世界各地,课程为他们提供丰富的环球经验及强劲的年薪增值。南洋EMBA课程每年录取约80名学生,来自亚欧非3大洲15个国家的外国学生占总收生人数约七成。

调查显示,报读南洋EMBA课程的学生毕业3年后,调整购买力平价(PPP)后的平均年薪为22万1672美元(约28万2662新元),比就读课程前增加七成。

国大商学院与安德森商学院联办的EMBA课程,毕业生平均年薪则为27万9284美元(约35万6125新元),比就读前增加近八成;独立开办课程的毕业生平均年薪则是24万4911美元(约31万2295新元),增幅近六成。

新加坡南洋理工大学科研人员研发出可以更快充电,而且延长电池寿命的方法。新科技让一般电池在两分钟内就能充电至70%,电池寿命也从原本的两年延长至20年。

厂商只需在制造一般的锂电子电池(lithium-ion battery)时,采用南大人员发明并获得专利的胶状物,就能达到这个效果。

目前,市面上的手机、平板电脑和电动车所使用的锂电子电池,平均需两小时才能充电满100%,充电和耗电的循环约500次,也就是说,若用户每天一次把电池充满电能,电池的平均寿命近1年半。

相比之下,采用新技术的锂电子电池充电速度更快,2分钟内就能充电至70%,充电满100%则不到1小时。电池的充电和耗电循环可以多达1万次,若用户每天充电1次,相等于电池的寿命可达至少20年。

领导研究的南大材料科学与工程学院副教授陈晓东博士受访时说,这项科技有望为各类电子商品的用户带来便利,尤其是电动车车主。

陈博士举例,三菱汽车今年推出的新款i-MiEV电动车,可以在30分钟内充电至80%,若改用南大研发的新技术,可在一般汽车添油的时间内,完成电动车局部充电的过程。

这款电动车的电池平均寿命约8年,替换电池的费用介于1万3000至1万8000元,若采用可以用上20年的新款电池,车主可以节省至少一次替换电池的费用。

NUS, NTU move up in global university rankings

Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and the National University of Singapore (NUS) continued to do well in the latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings, published on Thursday (Oct 2).

NUS moved up one spot to rank 25th in the world - its best placement since the annual ranking was introduced in 2010. It was also placed among the global top 50 in all six subjects measured. It achieved 13th place for Engineering and Technology, 29th for Social Sciences, 34th for Life Sciences, 41st for Physical Sciences, 42nd for Arts and Humanities, and 44th for Clinical, Pre-clinical, and Health.

NUS President Professor Tan Chorh Chuan said they are "delighted", and noted that NUS is one of only two Asian universities to be amongst the world’s top 25.

"Our consistently strong performance in international rankings is an affirmation of NUS’ top quality education and research, as well as wider impact of our work. This is also the result of the strong commitment to excellence by our faculty, staff and students,” he said.

NTU is ranked 61st in this year's rankings, moving up 15 places from last year. With this year's rankings, it has moved up 108 places in the last three years.

The university also scored full marks and maintained its number 1 global position for industry income and innovation. This measures a university's knowledge transfer by looking at how much research income an institution earns from industry, scaled against the number of its academic staff.

NTU President, Professor Bertil Andersson, called the ranking a "milestone". "By continuing to attract the best and brightest professors and students from Singapore and around the world, I expect that NTU will break into Times Higher’s top 50 universities in a few years’ time.”
