Free membership for NTU grads at 3 new alumni houses

Free membership for NTU grads at 3 new alumni houses

GRADUATES of Nanyang Technological University (NTU) can look forward to free membership at three new alumni houses.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of NTU's inauguration as a university, and it announced yesterday that it will open a 10,000 sq ft alumni house - equivalent to nine five-room flats - in Marina Square mall in November.

The second facility will be at NTU's main campus' North Spine Plaza and will open by the end of this year. The third will be at one-north and will open next year.

The alumni houses, which aim to keep NTU alumni connected to the university, will cater to all alumni, faculty and staff members.

There will be no membership fee and identification will be by NTU alumni or employee cards.

NTU's president, Professor Bertil Andersson, said the alumni houses will provide spaces where graduates can meet friends and former professors, or just relax with their families.

He added: "All graduates have a lifetime NTU membership. The university will be with them at the various stages in their lives and we want them to continue to keep the precious bonds and friendships they have made at NTU."

The Marina Square location will have rest areas, a restaurant and bar that can house over 200 guests.

Professor Lee Sing Kong, NTU's vice-president for alumni and advancement, said the three alumni houses were designed in response to extensive feedback from alumni, on how they would like to engage with one another.

NTU alumni are also entitled to a free alumni card that comes with benefits from over 60 participating merchants, and a lifelong e-mail account.

They can also use the university's sports and library facilities for a small fee, and apply for NTU's professional and personal development courses or graduate programmes at discounted rates.

Besides the retail and F&B outlets on campus, alumni can also enjoy promotions in areas such as shopping, dining, leisure, sport and entertainment, and hotels and resorts in Singapore and abroad.

108 NTU medical students get their white coats

108 NTU medical students get their white coats, double the number from inaugural class

For medical student Nadia Nasuha Mohammad Nazri, being a doctor is all about the human touch.

She recalled how a doctor at Changi General Hospital soothed her grandfather's fears when he was warded for a month for surgery.

"(The doctor) was very empathetic to patients like my grandfather, who has a fear of surgery," the 19-year-old recalled. "She treated him very well - not just verbally but her body language - and she was really a role model."

Ms Nadia was one of 108 students at the Nanyang Technological University's white coat ceremony on Monday (Aug 8) - where aspiring young doctors are given the white coat that symbolises the knowledge and compassion that they must exercise in the future.

This year's cohort is the university's largest to date, and is double the size of the inaugural class of 54 students in 2013.

Included in this year's intake are 20-year-old Zenneth Lim, a Ngee Ann Polytechnic graduate whose interest in medicine turned into a passion during his polytechnic years; and 21-year-old Jonathan Loke, who spent four months in Geneva earlier this year on an internship with the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Mr Loke recalled how inspired he was by the stories of his colleagues in Geneva. "They were willing to step out of their comfort zones and do something for the greater good," he said.
